Lanzarote today is a desireable holiday destination because of it's beautiful beaches and spectacular scenery. It wasn't always like this, however - far from it! You wouldn't have enjoyed a visit to Lanzarote in the 18th century.
From 1730 to 1736, a large part of Lanzarote was the scene of constant volcanic eruptions. A local priest recorded events as they unfolded and his account makes fascinating reading.
Life for Lanzarote's inhabitants was hard and, at times, cruel. Quite apart from scratching a living on a barren and dry island, they had to contend with pirates. As a consequence, many of the inhabitants of Lanzarote emigrated. This website attempts to recount all aspects of Lanzarote and reproduces lots of photographs to give you an indication of what it is like today.
