| List of Lanzarote's Bird Population |
|
I returned on the 31st January from a three week winter break - my wife and I are retired - based at the San Antonio Hotel in Puerto del Carmen. The holiday was not specifically a birding one but in fairness I did have more than my share of available time pursuing birds. Your list it was that persuaded me to visit, largely because it offered the opportunity to add a few "lifers" to my list. I did however find the effort- to -rewards ratio somewhat daunting! A final count of 44 was achieved with just four lifers, Barbary Partridge, Trumpeter Finch, Berthelots Pipit and Houbara Bustard. Two of each were seen (apart from the very common Berthelot's Pipit, which I saw lots of) but the Houbara Bustards were singletons in each case and at quite different locations. To rub salt into the wound it was my wife, an at times lukewarm birder, who pointed out the first Houbara with an excited "there's that bird thing that you want to see" and I was rewarded with an excellent, close and quite prolonged view using the car as a hide parked beside the GC-710. You mentioned in your notes that "gap-fillers" would be welcome and I offer the following small contribution:- Juvenile Gannet Seen during a strong blow from my room's balcony on12th Jan. Jack Snipe Seen at Cueva de la Arena / Playa de la Tio Salinas on 15th Jan. Robin Seen singing from a Palm in the Hotel gardens. The song was different. The intonations and pitch were Robin but it was presumably singing with a Lanzarotian accent? I hope the above is of interest and thanks again for the information. Yours sincerely Barry Dee. 12th February, 2002 |
