| Development of the Casas del Sol Estate |
| Casas del Sol is a residential and holiday estate in Playa Blanca which was built by a Norwegian company in the early 1980's. It consists of 128 individually owned bungalows, set out in blocks of 2 to 6 units. At the time the estate was built, Playa Blanca was a tiny fishing village with few amenities. The Norwegian company was able to choose the prime site for it's development. Land was not as expensive then as it is now, and the company was able to lay the site out very spaciously. It chose a site which was at the edge of the village centre. |

Close To The Village Centre |
As the years have progressed, so has Playa Blanca grown. The foresight of the Norwegian company in choosing this site is now becoming evident. Everything necessary for living or spending an enjoyable holiday in Playa Blanca is within easy walking distance - shops (with an attractively designed pedestrian area), restaurants and beaches are all at hand. The beginning of the pedestrian area can be seen in the top left corner of this photograph. |

| Peaceful and Quiet |
| Despite the development of many luxury hotels and bungalow estates in this southern part of Lanzarote, Casas del Sol remains peaceful and quiet. This is partly because the owners of the bungalows have consistently rejected the idea of having a restaurant or bar on the complex - there is, indeed, no need for this as there are plenty of these and other similar facilities within five minutes walking distance. |

| The Bungalows |
 Typical Bungalow |
 Enclosed Patio
|
The bungalows are of two types - the larger consists of two large bedrooms and one small one, whilst the smaller has one large bedroom and one small one. Each has it's own enclosed patio. About half of the estate is built on a south facing slope and, consequently, many of the bungalows have sea views. The bungalow featured on the right (one of the smaller ones) was my own and is the place where this web site first saw the light of day. |

| The Gardens |
 A Riot Of Colour |
The grounds of the estate cover an extensive area and are well maintained. Palm trees, hibiscus, oleander bushes and, of course, bougainvilleas, in a riot of colours, predominate. The constant temperate climate ensures that flowers abound throughout the whole year. |

| The Swimming Pools |
| The estate has a large seawater swimming pool (as featured at the top of this page) and a small children's pool. The aim of the Estate Administration is to maintain the temperature of the swimming pool at a steady 24 degrees centigrade - which it usually manages to do. The sunbathing terraces are a great place to relax. |

| Fairies at the Bottom of the Garden? |
Casas del Sol Overlooks The Harbour |
No chance !! Just across the road from the Casas del Sol estate, however, is a small and busy harbour, with two large ferries moored there - Fred Olsen's 'Buganvilla' and Armas' 'Volcan de Tindaya'.
The larger of the two - the 'Buganvilla' - has a capacity of 1,000 passengers and 104 vehicles and it towers above everything else in the harbour. The 'Buganvilla' can easily be seen from within Casas del Sol, and, from various viewpoints it appears that there is a 'ferry at the bottom of the garden'. |
