| The "jewel in the crown" of Lincolnshire's heritage, Lincoln Cathedral, dominates the city and the surrounding countryside for miles around. The original cathedral , begun in 1072 on the orders of William the Conqueror, was completed in 1092. It was built like a fortress but cound not withstand the natural disasters that were to occur. A fire in 1141 and an earthquake in 1185 all but destroyed it. Rebuilding began in 1192, under the guidance of the celebrated Bishop Hugh, and most of what we see today was completed by 1280. The central tower (271 feet) was added in 1311. All three towers were once capped by spires but the central spire blew down in a gale in 1548 and the two western spires were removed for safety reasons in 1807. |

| "Back home", for my wife and myself, is Lincoln in the county of Lincolnshire, England. There, our son's internet company, has prepared web sites for voluntary organisations and trusts concerned with the natural world and with the heritage of Lincolnshire. You may be interested to visit them. | ||
