About the Yangtze River
Yangtze River, together with the Yellow River, is the birthplace of Chinese civilization. Over 2,700 miles (6,000 km) long, the mighty Yangtze is the longest river in China and the third longest in the world. Along the upper reaches of the river lies the spectacular Three Gorges.
To sail through the famous Three Gorges of the Yangtze is to feel the power, majesty and timelessness of China's greatest - and the world's third longest river. Imagine the sight as sheer cliffs of rock close in around you, drawing you deeply into a scene of almost unspeakable beauty. Fishermen brave the rushing waters to net their livelihood. Birds dart between clouds, eyeing their prey far below. As the ship turns at a seemingly dead end, a new world of wonders suddenly unfolds before you ...
For a three gorges cruise, there are different plans to sail between different docks. you may go between Chongqing to Wuhan, or between Chongqing to Yichang, or between Chongqing to Shashi.
About the Three Gorges
The most impressive section of the river is the three Yangtze River gorges: the Qutang Gorge, Wu Gorge and Xiling Gorge, collectively known as the Sanxia ("san" is "three", "xia" means "gorge", or Three Gorges). The three gorges is 192 km in length. The Qutang Gorge, known for its magnificence, is only 8 km long. Wu Gorge, 44 km long, is famed for its deep valley and quiet beauty. Among the twelve peaks, the Goddess Peak is the most exquisite. Xiling Gorge, extending 66 km in length and full of turbulent currents and whirlpools, is one of the most dangerous shoals.
Qutang Gorge
Qutang Gorge, about 5 miles long (8 km), is the shortest, but the most perilous with torrential water roaring down from high cliffs. The narrowest part is less than 100 meters. Qutang is flanked by steep cliffs that face each other like a gigantic gate.
Wu Gorge
Wu Gorge, about 24 miles long (40 km), is very deep, running zigzag between the 1000-meter-high hills. Its most spectacular attractions are the twelve peaks hidden in swirls of clouds and mist. Each peak has its own charm with a beautiful legend behind it. The most prominent is Goddess Peak, which is said to be the personification of Goddess Yaoji in Chinese mythology.
Xiling GorgeXiling is also known for its calcareous sand. There are over 170 karst caves which were inhabited by cave dwellers who created the ancient Chinese civilization.
